Help and Suggestions on this
First, sorry - my scanner is not big enough to capture the all of this project. But this is a pastel I'm working on. Looking for input on two things: 1) Should I color in the background and if so, what color? 2) What about the vase? I don't really want to make it glass...I think that would be boring. What color would you guys suggest. I'm concerned to red will be too strong and steal away from the flowers as the main subject...a nice cobalt blue might work....waddya think? By the way... the original does not have the entire vase...just the top of it as shown. Thanks, TJ

Re: Help and Suggestions on this
I rather like it as it is ... interesting composition. Think a colour will detract from the flowers. You could try that warmish colour of the very top flower ... I think a strong red or blue will be too prominent. Tear bits of coloured paper and place them there to see the effect ...
My other suggestion would be to cut it off about in the middle of those bottom leaves (height of the vase) ... then it really is a decorative flower panel. Very nice!

Thanks for the input...want to make sure I understand your input about "cutting it off". Do you mean, 'not include the vase at all?' Do you mean cut the image I sent approximately and call just the top half the finished product? Interesting. Hadn't thot of that. TJ

Re: Help and Suggestions on this
Okay, I see what you mean...no I can't erase it...it's a "wet" pastel. I basically take a wet brush to pick up the pastel oil and apply it like watercolor and have to let it dry between layers like watercolor....and its obviously penned in first. But either way, your idea is interesting. I'll think about it. But that also gives me the freedom to go ahead and color it in. The complement to yellow is cyan...so that's why I thought a shade of blue would actually work quite well. Rather than tear bits of paper off, I took the scan to Photoshop and "filled in" with shade of blue that I was thinking about. It actually looked pretty good (let's see if I can manually produce it!!) Thanks again. TJ

Re: Help and Suggestions on this
Thanks for all your input. Attached is my "finished" project? Should I include a background or leave "as is?" As you can see Melly, I did go ahead with the blue, but I like your suggestion of just making a panel. That's not out of the question. TJ

Re: Help and Suggestions on this
You are welcome. Now HERE is where photoshop is so terrific ... you could scan in this pastel painting/drawing and experiment with a background colour or two and see how you feel! Trouble is that getting into that habit can make one rather indecisive ... I do it and try out lots of colours and shapes (if I have time) whereas my daughter starts at the top left and just draws and paints! We are all so different ... hallelujah!
